Edible Garden Design: Beautiful Landscapes That Taste as Good as They Look

Edible Garden Design: Beautiful Landscapes That Taste as Good as They Look

Edible gardens have evolved far beyond the backyard vegetable patch. Across Australia, more homeowners are discovering the appeal of edible garden design, where food plants are integrated seamlessly into ornamental landscapes. This approach, often referred to as foodscaping, blends productivity with beauty so your garden becomes both functional and visually refined.

At Inspired Exteriors, we believe an edible garden should enrich your lifestyle as much as it enhances your home. It’s about creating outdoor spaces that feed the senses, foster connection, and deliver fresh ingredients straight from the garden to the table.

Why Edible Garden Design Is Growing Across Australia
A thoughtfully designed edible garden is more than a source of produce. It becomes a feature of the landscape, adding texture, fragrance, and colour while also providing seasonal harvests. Australia’s diverse climates support a wide range of edible plants, from citrus and herbs to native bush tucker species with distinct flavours and stories.

Integrating these species into your landscape supports biodiversity, reduces grocery costs, and creates year-round interest. It also deepens your connection to place. Picking herbs or fruit grown in your own garden transforms everyday cooking into something more personal. For many clients, edible gardens are as much about wellness and sustainability as they are about design.

Native Plants That Redefine Edible Garden Design
Our project in Hunters Hill NSW, shows how edible garden design can merge productivity with contemporary style. The brief was for a low-maintenance, fully native garden that would feel lush, sculptural, and functional for entertaining. The planting palette included a variety of Australian native edibles chosen for both flavour and form:

  • Finger Lime (Citrus australasica): A native citrus with tangy, caviar-like pearls that elevate drinks and seafood.
  • Tucker Bush Cherry (Syzygium australe): A small tree bearing sweet berries perfect for fresh eating or desserts.
  • Boobialla (Myoporum insulare ‘Prostrate’): A hardy coastal shrub with edible berries.
  • Native Thyme (Prostanthera incisa): Aromatic leaves ideal for marinades and savoury cocktails.
  • Native River Mint (Mentha australis): Fragrant and refreshing, great for garnishes and teas.
  • Native Oregano (Prostanthera rotundifolia): A robust herb for pizzas and infused oils.
  • Bush Basil (Plectranthus graveolens): A peppery alternative to traditional basil.

These plants were positioned among native grasses, ferns, and flowering shrubs so they appear as part of the overall composition, not a separate vegetable garden. The result is a layered, productive landscape that looks refined and thrives naturally.

Integrating Edible Gardens in Landscape Architecture
In our work across landscape architecture, edible planting is always integrated into the design from the start. We consider microclimate, soil, light, and access so that productive areas feel intentional and effortless to maintain. Placement is key. Herbs near the kitchen are more likely to be used, while fruiting trees and shrubs can define pathways or provide screening.

Edible gardens also encourage interaction. Guests notice unusual plants, children learn about native foods, and there’s pride in harvesting produce moments before serving it. Even small changes, such as edging a path with herbs or replacing a shrub with a native edible species, can introduce food plants without altering the garden’s structure.

Native edibles offer resilience to pests, drought, and changing weather conditions, making them ideal for sustainable design. Through careful integration, they enrich the landscape both visually and ecologically.

At Inspired Exteriors, we design edible gardens that are as beautiful as they are functional. From small urban courtyards to rural estates, our approach ensures each space feels cohesive, productive, and uniquely suited to its site.
